This week, the Alien franchise is celebrating its 45th anniversary by releasing Alien: Romulus. The film is a sequel to the original Alien, and takes place during the decades-long gap between that movie and James Cameron’s Aliens. The first reactions to Alien: Romulus have now arrived online; and while most of the early word is good, there are some mixed responses as well.
Borys Kit of The Hollywood Reporter called it the “summer’s best movie,” and teased a “crazy new direction.”
Variety’s Courtney Howard added that the film “subtly plays the greatest hits” of the franchise.
IGN’s Amelia Emberwing wasn’t quite as enthusiastic, and critiqued the character development and the set pieces. But she did praise the “effective scares.”

Season 6 of Warzone includes Call of Duty’s annual The Haunting event, and the spooky theme brings one of the battle royale’s most interesting limited-time modes. Purgatory isn’t your typical Warzone experience, but it’s a fun sandbox-style mode that feels like the perfect send-off for this final season of Modern Warfare 3. It’s also a refreshingly chill mode that should stick around long-term.
Purgatory is played with 10 squads of four battling on Season 6’s Hellspawn variant of Rebirth Island. The map’s hellish makeover includes an eerie sky, blood-red water, zombified NPC creatures, and flesh-covered walls, providing enough atmospheric changes here to get you in the Halloween spirit.

Eating Doritos could be your ticket to getting double XP in Call of Duty: Warzone and Call of Duty: Vanguard. Specially marked bags of Doritos are now appearing at retailers in the US, it seems, offering “dual XP” for both Warzone and Vanguard. The next wave of Xbox Game Pass titles have been confirmed after a previous leak. All of them are headed to the program before the end of February, and they include some heavy hitters–and one big lawnmower.
New additions for the second half of February include the day-one release of Total War: Warhammer III as perhaps the biggest release of the month. It is the conclusion to the Total War: Warhammer trilogy, and it invites players to embark into the Realm of Chaos, a world of “mind-bending horror.”
Also coming this month are Roboquest, Madden NFL 22, Super Mega Baseball 3, and Galactic Civilizations III. EA’s Alice: Madness Returns is coming to Game Pass on PC, too. Madden and Alice are available through EA Play, which is included with Game Pass Ultimate.
